Coping Mechanisms

Coping Mechanisms

Coping mechanisms are the strategies people often use in the face of stress and/or trauma to help manage painful or difficult emotions. Coping mechanisms can help people adjust to stressful events while helping them maintain their emotional well-being.

WHAT ARE COPING MECHANISMS?

Significant life events, whether positive or negative, can cause psychological stress. Difficult events, such as divorce, miscarriage, the death of a loved one, or the loss of a job, can cause most people to feel grief or distress. But even events that are considered positive by many—getting marriedhaving a child, and buying a home—can lead to a significant amounts of stress. To adjust to this stress, people may utilize some combination of behavior, thought, and emotion, depending on the situation.

People may use coping mechanisms for stress management or to cope with anger, loneliness, anxiety, or depression.

HOW ARE COPING MECHANISMS AND DEFENSE MECHANISMS DIFFERENT?

Some may confuse defense mechanisms with coping mechanisms. Although these two concepts share some similarities, they are, in fact, different.

  • Defense mechanisms mostly occur at an unconscious level, and people are generally unaware they are using them. One’s use of coping mechanisms, on the other hand, is typically conscious and purposeful.
  • Coping mechanisms are used to manage an external situation that is creating problems for an individual. Defense mechanisms can change a person’s internal psychological state.

COPING STYLES AND MECHANISMS

Coping styles can be problem-focused—also called instrumental—or emotion-focused. Problem-focused coping strategies are typically associated with methods of dealing with the problem in order to reduce stress, while emotion-focused mechanisms can help people handle any feelings of distress that result from the problem.

Further, coping mechanisms can be broadly categorized as active or avoidant. Active coping mechanisms usually involve an awareness of the stressor and conscious attempts to reduce stress. Avoidant coping mechanisms, on the other hand, are characterized by ignoring or otherwise avoiding the problem.

Some coping methods, though they work for a time, are not effective for a long-term period. These ineffective coping mechanisms, which can often be counterproductive or have unintended negative consequences, are known as “maladaptive coping.” Adaptive coping mechanisms are those generally considered to be healthy and effective ways of managing stressful situations.

TYPES OF COPING MECHANISMS

Among the more commonly used adaptive coping mechanisms are:

  • Support: Talking about a stressful event with a supportive person can be an effective way to manage stress. Seeking external support instead of self-isolating and internalizing the effects of stress can greatly reduce the negative effects of a difficult situation.
  • Relaxation: Any number of relaxing activities can help people cope with stress. Relaxing activities may include practicing meditation, progressive muscle relaxation or other calming techniques, sitting in nature, or listening to soft music.
  • Problem-solving: This coping mechanism involves identifying a problem that is causing stress and then developing and putting into action some potential solutions for effectively managing it.
  • Humor: Making light of a stressful situation may help people maintain perspective and prevent the situation from becoming overwhelming.
  • Physical activity: Exercise can serve as a natural and healthy form of stress relief. Running, yoga, swimming, walking, dance, team sports, and many other types of physical activity can help people cope with stress and the aftereffects of traumatic events.

A short list of common maladaptive coping mechanisms includes:

  • Escape: To cope with anxiety or stress, some people may withdraw from friends and become socially isolated. They may absorb themselves in a solitary activity such as watching television, reading, or spending time online.
  • Unhealthy self-soothing: Some self-soothing behaviors are healthy in moderation but may turn into an unhealthy addiction if it becomes a habit to use them to self-soothe. Some examples of unhealthy self-soothing could include overeating, binge drinking, or excessive use of internet or video games.
  • Numbing: Some self-soothing behaviors may become numbing behaviors. When a person engages in numbing behavior, they are often aware of what they are doing and may seek out an activity that will help them drown out or override their distress. People may seek to numb their stress by eating junk food, excessive alcohol use, or using drugs.
  • Compulsions and risk-taking: Stress can cause some people to seek an adrenaline rush through compulsive or risk-taking behaviors such as gambling, unsafe sex, experimenting with drugs, theft, or reckless driving.
  • Self-harm: People may engage in self-harming behaviors to cope with extreme stress or trauma.

COPING MECHANISMS AND MENTAL HEALTH

The use of effective coping skills can often help improve mental and emotional well-being. People who are able to adjust to stressful or traumatic situations (and the lasting impact these incidents may have) through productive coping mechanisms may be less likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns as a result of painful or challenging events.

People who find themselves defaulting to maladaptive coping mechanisms and/or experience difficulty utilizing effective coping strategies may eventually see a negative impact on mental and emotional well-being. Those who have a difficult time knowing how to cope with anxiety, stress, or anger may fall into the habit of relying on a maladaptive coping mechanism. Consuming alcohol can often help people feel less stressed in the immediate moment, for example, but if a person comes to rely on alcohol, or any other substance, in the face of challenging situations, they may eventually become dependent on the substance over time.

If you experience stress and don’t know how to cope, a therapist or other mental health professional can often help you develop and improve your coping skills. Therapists can provide support and information about coping skills, and therapy sessions can be a safe, nonjudgmental environment for people to explore the coping methods they rely on and determine how they help or hinder stress management.

Café Culture and Heresy of Yahooboyism in Nigeria.

Café Culture and Heresy of Yahooboyism in Nigeria.

The Overview of the Outrageous Exploitation of the Internet in Nigeria;

Café Culture and Heresy of Yahooboyism in Nigeria.

The advent of Internet technology has significantly improved the state of human existence. In fields as far-reaching as educational research, public administration, commercial and business transactions, industrial production and biotechnological development, and global networking, the Internet offers limitless opportunities. Indeed, affirming that global society can no longer function adequately in the absence of the Internet is an affirmation of the obvious. In spite of all of its benefits, however, the Internet is also used in a destructive, antisocial manner by individuals often referred to by such names as hackers, cyber fraudsters, web criminals, and so forth. In Nigeria—a notable haven for such criminal disposition-they are known as yahooboys.

The Internet has altered the patterns of cultural cleavages, the process of socialization, and identifiable social institutions across varying human societies. However, unlike traditional criminal groups, both males and females are involved in what has been termed yahooboyism in Nigeria, albeit with differing degrees of specialized functions. The culture of fraud and corruption prevalent within larger Nigerian society is believed to have facilitated the institutionalization of yahooboyism as a subset. But such a level of “modernization of criminality” among Nigerian youths has been enabled solely by the Internet; an intrinsically insecure space in which nobody knows who exactly you are.

It has been observed that a café culture is prevalent among contemporary Nigerian youths, especially those living in the cities or in semiurban settlements that off er easy access to modern technologies such as the Internet. Café culture is indicative of an emergent way of life in which involved youths conceive of the Internet as their “everything,” from a school (where they can practice and polish their acts of deceit) to a money-making venture (where they can fraudulently eke out a living, thereby escaping the poverty doldrums prevalent in the country and, ultimately, government and society).

In their café culture, these individuals live practically a virtual life and are more familiar with the developments via the Internet than those unfolding within their immediate “real” society. In a research study by a psychology student (Rukayyah Abdulrahman) at the University of Ilorin; titled influence of excessive internet use on self esteem. It was discovered that many youths use internet excessively that it gradually damages their psychological wellbeing. Despite being one of the most endowed countries (in terms of human and natural resources) on earth, Nigeria remains one of the poorest nations in the world, where the state of the human condition has continued to deteriorate over the years (United Nations Development Programme, 2009).

Unemployment, lack of social support, and the deteriorating condition of the country overall has made the country’s youths a ready tool for the conduct of cogent nefarious activities such as those easily attainable through the Internet. Meanwhile, technological advances such as the Internet have brought astonishing alterations to Nigeria’s institutional and cultural cleavages. Nigerian youths have accepted the Internet as a way of life with unusual speed.

Specifically, the Internet has not just imprinted a potent amendment on the Nigerian culture, but it has irredeemably affected the behavioral patterns of Nigerian youths, evidence of this was revealed in the research study: influence of excessive internet use on self esteem. Ostensibly, yahooboyism has emerged as a result. The phenomenon of yahooboyism could be said to represent a state of “cultural lag” within Nigerian society; that is, inferring from the conceptualized two aspects of a culture: the technological (i.e., the material aspects such as the Internet) and the sociological (i.e., usually theoretical or ideological aspects such as norms and beliefs).

The period of maladjustment when the nonmaterial culture is still struggling to adapt to new material conditions is deemed a cultural lag (Ogborn, 1922). With regard to Nigeria, the cultural lag created by the introduction of the Internet to Nigerian society has provided a platform for the emergence of the infamous café culture, which is set to unproductively alter the developmental process of the country’s youths. Within the larger social superstructure in Nigeria, especially among the political class-wealth, often ill gotten, is worshipped.

In assuming political positions, leaders overemphasize the place of money. Upon assumption of office, individuals flagrantly embezzle public money. As such, the provision of services to the citizenry, such as the training of youths, is neglected. On the other hand, among most Nigerians, money from any source typically is the most potent yardstick for determining the level of existential attainment.

Money rather than a quality education, productive leadership, scientific discovery, or solid career development is the yardstick against which people are measured. Hence, society is exposed to youths who have been disillusioned and have not been taught the good virtue of genuine hard work. Such youth have had no trouble immersing themselves in the Internet phenomenon of yahooboyism. If, as outcomes of cogent observations suggest, the Internet continues to spread and becomes essentially ubiquitous in socioeconomic relations, then Nigerian society will indisputably become increasingly dependent on a fragile and insecure information structure.

As such, our youths’ future is in avoidable jeopardy: The cultural patterns of yahooboyism are bound to be transmitted across generations if nothing concrete is done to regulate its spread and usage in Nigerian society. Of course, the Nigerian nation has been described as a largely unordered society in which rules are sacrificed, integrity is nonexistent, brutal selfishness is appraised (because leaders who embezzle public properties are respected and celebrated) and shame no longer exists for despiteful acts. Conspicuously, shameful acts are celebrated and success is redefined as wealth becomes more significant than the means of attaining it (including self actualization)

Instant wealth, regardless of its source, is usually celebrated among the Nigerian populace. In fact, it is usually equated with smartness and is rarely rebuked. In Nigeria, corrupt practices are characteristic not only of the political leadership but also of other types and levels of leadership. As such, values of integrity and honesty are despised, as there is total disregard for rules and regulations across all strata of society. For instance, at both the household and community levels, respective agents of socialization often tend to inculcate in the children and young adults the value of hard work and integrity, but most often, it is at odds with what they observe the elders themselves doing and appreciating.

The yahooboys use the Internet as a platform for engaging in online fraud. Examples of the yahooboys’ objectionable engagements include selling fictitious goods/services and buying what they will not pay for (or paying in no real value); money laundering; hacking; and engaging in credit card scams, pornography, and unconventional sexuality. Ironically, the yahooboys’ criminal applications of the Internet in Nigeria can be directly linked to the failure of a political leadership (Adeniran, 2006).

Yahooboyism is the activity of online youth fraudsters in Nigeria

This is also linked to lack of regulatory entity that focuses on the cyber space. This is however a changed story with the existence of an innovative organization; ProInSafe which focuses on regulating online business activities in Nigeria. With adequate support of the government and cooperation of credible businesses and reputable organizations, ProInSafe being a lucrative initiative will promote internet safety (therefore business scam will significantly be mitigated) and foster rapid growth of credible businesses. Obviously, ProInSafe exists to empower entrepreneurs. Another great benefit of ProInSafe is that it serves to provide numerous job opportunities, reduce crime rates and facilitate community development through their sustainable empowerment projects.

Out-of-school students (who are not in school because of distortions in the school calendar) and unemployed youths constitute a considerable percentage of the yahooboys in Nigeria. Indeed, they ignorantly but proudly claim that their involvement in cybercrime is a way of getting back at such an unjust social system in a “nonviolent” way. This was discovered in the study on investigating the roles of the failing national leadership and the insecure Internet platform in the emergence of the yahooboys phenomenon in Nigeria.

Rukayyah: ProInSafe is fully known as Promoting Internet Safety. ProInSafe is a Nigerian innovative organization that exists to promote cyber security, credible businesses and empower the youths in order to encourage innovations and foster an all-inclusive development. ProInSafe validates businesses, generate codes for businesses that are found credible to easily convince their online potential consumers of their credibility. ProInSafe is dedicated to ensure that credible businesses thrive, youths are supported to be self reliant and self actualized and to ensure that risks of cyber crime are mitigated. Through our educative and inspiring blogs, we also enlighten youths. We have seasoned staff who facilitate our operations. We also have an official website where our major services are rendered. In addition to this, ProInSafe also renders business development consultancy services, advertisement and also provide mentorship to youths and start-ups. Interviewer: How does your empowerment work?

Rukayya: To facilitate our operations which includes mitigating risks of cyber crimes. We incorporated ProInSafe Empowerment Projects where we provide necessary resources and support to youths and start ups. Currently we are working on a project called PLACY Club where we gather secondary school students to imbibe in them effective leadership qualities, train them to discover and develop their potentials and talent to be more productive and become great leaders. This also involves exploiting their potentials, engaging them in various services to facilitate sustainable community and national development.

Interviewer: Thank you. Please can you share with us your favorite motivational words?

Rukayya: (Smiles) Well, I have many, I will share the ones that come to mind at the moment. The most beautiful thing in life is to be the reason for others’ happiness and smiles. Being selfless is the fastest road to greatness.  Be the change you like to observe in the world, life is a reflection of who you are. Keep learning to keep soaring. You will face obstacles but they are voices of the divine telling you to keep moving ‘cos you’re almost there at the beautiful destination destined for the fearless and courageous ones like you. We all have a purpose to fulfill until we discover and fulfill it, before we experience absolute bliss and peace we wholeheartedly crave. I try to live these words, walk my talks and nothing pacifies me more. More so preaching what I practise is easier than practising what I preach, therefore it is amazing that my actions match with my words and that inspires constructive changes in other people as well. Oops! Sorry, I had to say this much (smiles)

INTRODUCTION TO A NIGERIAN INNOVATIVE ORGANIZATION-PROINSAFE

INTRODUCTION TO A NIGERIAN INNOVATIVE ORGANIZATION-PROINSAFE

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PROINSAFE PRESENTED AT PROINSAFE LAUNCHING EVENT.

Introduction

The damage caused by cybercrime is estimated to hit $6 trillion by the year 2021. This has led to a forecast that there will be an estimated increase in spending by companies for cyber security between the periods of 2017 and 2021 to $1 trillion. According to Gartner, as at 2016, more than $80 billion was spent on products and services related to cyber security. This is however expected to exceed $1 trillion globally within a five-year period.

As a matter of fact, the cyber security industry is one that is fast paced as there is zero percent unemployment rates in this industry. The industry in fact has unfilled positions that are expected to reach 1.5 million by the year 2019. This shows that there is severe shortage of talent especially as more cybercrimes are being committed almost every other day.

Despite the fact that cyber security companies can easily be found in the United States of America and in the cyberspace, does not in any way make the industry to be over saturated. The fact that there are people and organizations out there who would always need the professional services of cyber security companies from time to time to sort out cyber security related issues et al makes the business ever green….Adapted from profitable venture.com

However cyber security company has not fully gained ground in Nigeria, we need to feel the impact of this industry because it has so much to offer Nigeria in both security and economy sector.

ProInSafe stemmed out because of this, the purpose of creating this innovative organization is to create  a safe and prosperous environment for all to thrive.

ProInSafe fully known as Promoting Internet Safety is an innovative profit making organization in Nigeria (its our dream to expand far beyond this country) and it exists to strategically promote internet safety while providing supports and empowerment for youths to achieve self actualization and self reliance in a credible way.

Significance

Few or many of us here today have or know someone who has fallen victims of scam businesses. No matter how wealthy someone is, it is such a bad idea losing money in such a pathetic way. Its not enough to lose money but we tend to experience emotional breakdowns as a result, which may result into depression or paranoia; inability to trust even credible businesses.

As much as people tried to discard this idea because they believed it was impossible or an herculean task. We still decided to venture into it because of our passion to resolve a problem (cyber crime and unemployment)  that is an impetus to many other societal difficulties reflecting in the socio-economic state of the country. However our passion is not enough, we continue to progress with the strong support of our great Father known as Father of The Universe. Without him nothing would have been in existence.

Therefore cybercrime is not a problem to be swept under the carpet. No matter how huge/difficult/expensive the task appears, we must start from somewhere and as soon as possible to prevent the problems from escalating. Cyber Security Expert of Nigeria also raised  that concrete solution must be provided to mitigate the issue of cybercrime. This statement is one of the driving forces behind the existence of ProInSafe. During our feasibility studies, we discovered more than 50% of entrepreneurs require our services. In fact with a month of our establishment, we have about 10 clients already. This explains that our services are valuable and our target market is quite huge and responsive. With these businesses’ cooperation, our goals will be achieved.

For example, we had to start using the house as our office since much of our work is online based, many of our meetings are online as well.  The staff working with ProInSafe are volunteers (who only have access to certain remuneration for their duties) at the moment but we hope that as we progress  they will be full time employees because they are highly skilled and competent they deserve to earn handsome salaries.

We use strategic measures to verify and validate businesses.  Our website is well secured and we are less vulnerable to such cyber hazard as hacking even though this cannot  be prevented. If such ever happened we have put it in place measures to prevent great havoc. Part of our project will involve supporting technological researches and innovations to proffer lasting solutions to cyber and other related crimes and dangers. Your personal info are safe with ProInSafe, most definitely unless security reasons call for sharing your details with the third party.

Experience maximum safety and prosperity with ProInSafe.

The unemployment rate in Nigeria is a painful reality, and the higher this gets the more problems  surface in Nigeria. Many people resolved to cyber crime because of lack of job opportunity. ProInSafe then incorporates empowerment program to support startups and youths who are committed to community development services.

Our empowerment program known as ProInSafe Empowerment Projects (PEP) exists to encourage innovations, promote leadership skills amongst the youths and also facilitate sustainable community development. Our attitudes must be reformed to foster growth in the society. Our projects and empowerment program therefore support ventures that seek to solve relevant problems affecting the society especially as it regards mental wellbeing, poverty, unemployment rate and environmental sanitation. In addition to this, ProInSafe post registered schools and their relevant activities on its website and social media pages to publicize them more. In fact it is our interest to train students to engage in casual journalism, in which they go to certain educational occasions, gather and report information. This is to provide valuable experience and exposure to students who are interested in mass communication and relevant fields.

Our current project is PLACY Club, an empowerment program that focuses on secondary schools in Nigeria. We select students from different schools to participate in the program  and engage in projects to resolve mini problems affecting the community. This project involves exploiting youths as tools for sustainable development of the community. We will focus on environmental sanitation, quality education, vocational training, leadership training, mentorship & counselling and poverty alleviation. Building their attitudes from tender age is a great benefit for the society as the actions of people determine the status quo of every society.

Presentation at ProInSafe Launching

ProInSafe Launching

ProInSafe major goals are:

  • To mitigate online scam businesses, hence promote internet safety
  • To reduce unemployment rates
  • To encourage innovations
  • To create an enabling environment where all diligent and sincere youths (including entrepreneurs) thrive.
  • Facilitate the achievement of SDGs definitely. We have SDG in mind in our operations.

We are willing to adopt every means that’s of course legal to achieve these goals. The vision which is to create a safe digital world and facilitate economic growth of the country;  mission which involves the implementation of the plan relevant to our goals.

Some of the means include to:

  • Analyze and establish security requirements for our systems/networks
  • Defend systems against unauthorized access, modification and/or destruction
  • Configure and support security tools such as firewalls, anti-virus software, patch management systems, etc.
  • Define access privileges, control structures and resources
  • Perform vulnerability testing, risk analyses and security assessments
  • Identify abnormalities and report violations to higher authorities
  • Oversee and monitor routine security administration
  • Develop and update business continuity and disaster recovery protocols
  • Partner with relevant governmental agencies and organizations e.g Cyber security forums , CAC,  etc.
  • Employ highly intelligent and skilled professionals
  • Train fellow employees in security awareness, protocols and procedures
  • Design and conduct security audits to ensure operational security
  • Respond immediately to security incidents and provide post-incident analysis
  • Research and recommend security upgrades
  • Provide technical advice to colleagues
  • With our facilities, structures and infrastructures, we will achieve our mission and realize our vision.

There are many benefits to ProInSafe but I will summarize the benefits here right now. Many of us here today have great products and services and trust me more than half of those you advertise to need these products and services, but only less than a quarter of these people patronizes you. Two reasons cause this either the consumers do not have enough money to purchase or they keep procrastinating till they forget to patronize but the latter is not so relevant because what you truly need you will get it, so the second major problem is lack of trust due to the prevalent issue of online scam.

Everyone cannot stop asking is this business legit? Often the answer to this is “I don’t think so” because even though comments and recommendations on the website can be deceptive. I have a few friends who have fallen victims. And ever since you will not find them purchasing online except through Jumia. Some businesses rely more on referrals , this as well works but what if someone needs your product or services but do not know someone that can refer you to them or recommend them to you. Is this not sad. Are you as a business owner not gradually losing income.

Not everyone is as reputable as Jumia, entrepreneurs are really coming up because that appears to be the trending solution to unemployment which of course is a wise step to take to develop our communities and advance the economy of the state. However many of these entrepreneurs face digital marketing challenges, one of which is losing potential customers/clients to “bizaporia;” which implies inability to trust the credibility of a truly credible business.

Many people because of these challenges feel discouraged to own a business and even if they do they are unable to enjoy the advantage of the internet for their business. Internet circulates information faster, so as business owners we cannot avoid it, and this is a reason we must proffer a solution to the problem.  Other countries are into this similar venture, we decided it must exist here in Nigeria as well.

ProInSafe  encourages the credible entrepreneurs by helping them to convince their potential customers. This is a great deal that cannot be overlooked. The more investments we have, the lesser unemployment rate we battle with. The secret to the economic development of other countries is in their countless business investments, start ups and private business sectors. Firstly this takes the business owner out of the huge number of unemployed youths, most importantly these businesses will be able to employ others. Gradually gradually we are advancing the economy of the country. ProInSafe has potential to hire more than 800 individuals as  we progress. Graduates keep increasing but limited opportunities exist. The solution to this is more investments, to provide job opportunities to hire more and more youths. Someone here or someone you know could be this youth that will be hired.

ProInSafe aims to expand across Africa if not the world, that’s the vision, that is every business must be regulated by ProInSafe, get their code to easily convince their potential online consumers of their credibility, make more sales, maximize profits and contribute to our goals to mitigate the risks of business scam. We will increase online visibility of businesses.

As we progress we hope to innovate soft wares and gadgets that will specifically be used to detect scams and facilitate our works that we may even replicate to sell to others. We will realize our dreams if we get support from you all, and others who are not privileged to be here. We ask you to discuss ProInSafe with them all. As we get endorsements, supports especially from government and reputable entities and of course an investor or adequate funding, our operations will be facilitated and we will get to realize our vision.

In conclusion, ProInSafe is registered with appropriate bodies. Our RC number is . We are focused on empowering youths and to support entrepreneurship in Nigeria. I must mention that we aim to dedicate certain percentage of our profits to support start-ups. We also aim to link up credible start ups with investors. There are investors willing to support start ups, they only need a medium to be sure these start ups are indeed genuine, lucrative and sustainable. We will ensure to link up only start ups that meet up with these criteria. We are willing to implement all relevant policies to achieve our goals. ProInSafe will function optimally with adequate facilities and support from notable people and firms in Nigeria. We thereby seek supports from these agencies to support and invest in our innovative organization. For more information about ProInSafe, please visit www.proinsafe.com. Thank you.

Title: Standard Road to Success

A business woman was at her store and she looked all depressed. One of her distributors went to get more goods.

The distributor: Good day ma.

Business Woman: Welcome, how are you doing?

The distributor: (Looks excited) I am very fine, and you?

Business woman: (sighs) I am alive o.

The distributor: Madam, what is wrong with you?  You don’t look okay.

Business woman: I cannot be okay when I am barely making sales. Everything is dry. It amazes me that you come here so often to get goods. In fact, you are the only distributor who’s been patronizing me lately which explains that only you have been making a great deal of sales. (She moves closer to him and whispers)Tell me, what is the secret? What are you doing differently that some of us are not doing?

The distributor: (Smiles) It’s very simple ma. Didn’t you register your business at all?

Business woman: (Gave disappointment gestures) Mmm. I did, but obviously there is nothing to show for it. It was just normal required registration, I guess.

The distributor: You have not heard about ProInSafe?

Business woman: Pro…ProInSafe? Not really.

The distributor: (laughs)  Actually, I have been making abundant sales ever since I registered with ProInSafe. I must tell you that I am even here for more goods. ProInSafe has been so helpful in increasing my patronage because I engage in digital marketing, therefore, with ProInSafe it has been very easy to convince online consumers of my credibility. (Phone rings) Hello Iya konko, ohhhkay, I will be back in a jiffy. Please attend to all my customers, I must not lose any of them. I am at madam’s shop to get more stock.

Business Woman: (Adjusts her sitting posture and pays keen attention to him) Please tell me more. What is this ProInSafe all about?

The distributor: (smiles) ProInSafe is fully known as Promoting Internet Safety. That is basically what the organization is all about. ProInSafe exists to promote cyber security, provide job opportunities, promote credible businesses and empower the youths. ProInSafe is indeed tested and trusted! Go to www.proinsafe.com to register your business in order to boost your sales and also to support their vision to promote cyber security and foster socio-economic development of the country.

Business Woman: Ahh. This sounds so interesting but I am very broke at the moment. I don’t think I can afford this now. (she looks gloomy)

The distributor: You are telling me you cannot spare less than 4000 naira to grow your business?

Business woman: (Apparently shocked) Are you serious? I thought you would mention an amount that is between 20-50k or more.

The distributor: Not at all. In fact ProInSafe has made me realize that so many people actually require our products, but our low patronage is usually as a result of less advertisement and lack of trusts by consumers. ProInSafe has come to resolve such entrepreneurial issues by helping all entrepreneurs with online presence to make higher sales and maximize their profits. ProInSafe is virtually an an online business regulatory organization. They are here to encourage entrepreneurship and accelerate socio-economic development of the country. They also render affordable advertisement, business consultancy and other relevant cyber security services.

The business woman was indeed amazed by this great innovative opportunity. She asked for the organization’s contact details. The distributor gave it to her and she immediately took an excuse to contact ProInSafe Organization.

The next scene showed two friends, one of the friends who was a PLACY club member was on his way back from a sport competition. He met his friend who asked where he was coming from.

Bayo and Agboola at PLACY Club Play

Bayo: Hey friend! How are you?

Agboola: I am good. What’s up? Where are you coming from with all these sport kits?

Bayo: I am just returning from a sport competition organized by PLACY club program.

Agoola: What is that? Could you please give more details?

Bayo: PLACY Club is fully known as ProInSafe Leadership And Community Youth Club. It is one of the projects of ProInSafe Empowerment Projects  created for secondary schools, the club is dedicated to discovering and developing youths’ potentials and exploiting the potentials to encourage innovations, create great leader and facilitate community development. We engage in various training sessions, programs and community development services to achieve our goals.

Agboola: That’s fantastic! No wonder you are now more mature and resourceful. Wait! I saw a billboard of a beautiful art work, with the words PLACY Club on it, along Ibrahim street over there (points to the right side of the road) , are you guys responsible for that?

Bayo: Yes. Some of the students made that under the supervision of an artist. We create many things and even help respective schools to meet their needs.

Agboola showed interest and Bayo asked him to come to their next conference to meet with the Club Team. They walked along the same path and continued to discuss PLACY Club.

Every Nigerian is to be blamed for the economic upheavals of the country

Every Nigerian is to be blamed for the economic upheavals of the country

It is undeniable that the economy of Nigeria is being sabotaged and crushed by the corrupt people, the supposed leaders so to say.

Yet our own attitudes contribute more to the turbulence faced by the country economically. When we mention Nigeria, its not just about the geographical entity, it is absolutely about the lives existing in the geographical entity, specially the “thinking beings” there.

Let’s go straight to the point. Many of us do not purchase a product, if we find our country name written on it, such as “made in Nigeria.” That’s unfair, humiliating and catastrophic. We don’t even know that these attitudes and the likes are the obstacles impeding the great nation especially in terms of her economy.

We need to regulate the cash flow by patronizing the businesses in our country, that’s the biggest investment, if only we know. Let’s cite an example, you go to a Nigerian hospital for your surgery, get products made in Nigeria etc.

These are ways to generate income into the country. Some people might think, if we generate income, the government and people in positions will be the ones to consume it all. You may be right, but think of it this way, it could also create a reality, in which there is enough for everyone.

Buying items made in Nigeria from retailers will compel the retailers to get more of such items from wholesalers, consequently the wholesalers will continue to demand more from the producers. In that manner, our market is being expanded, transaction is going on, cash is flowing in and out within the country. The companies are delighted and continue to make all efforts to gratify the consumers.

The workers are getting good pay, they are able to pay children’s school fees, teachers are enjoying the boons and boom as well because the school management are able to promptly pay up their salaries, people are able to generate capital to start businesses from their income too, there is more to buy, there is more to sell, there is enough income for everyone to buy, prices of things go high or low, everyone is already getting enough to use to purchase.

We should note that every sector will definitely walk along the progressive triumphs with the business/economic sectors. Therefore civil servants won’t be left out, their salaries will stop ceasing. Inevitably the standards of living continue to increase for Nigerians, if not all, a significant number of them(Nigerians).

When 70% of the people are financially buoyant, the 30% will easily be catered for. Rukayyah Rahman.

We cannot escape the consequences of our decisions and actions. Therefore we need to play our own part and see what comes out of it, we need to stop investing in other countries so much that we continue to push our dear country into economic pitfalls. Major problem in Nigeria is that Nigerians often act without considering the proportional consequence of such actions.  If you don’t spend your money to purchase more in the country, then be ready to suffer from the crimes and other inconveniences associated with poverty and unemployment rates.

All these things are connected, they are! Companies won’t hire if they make less sales, people won’t strive to start a business or invest in a business expansion if they know they won’t be patronized. Fake products will continue to be on the rise because everyone is struggling to make a living and no buyers to buy their quality products created out of sweat, energy and huge sum of money.

Working together, we will continue to lay the foundation for a new generation of inclusive economic growth, expand economic opportunity for middle-class families, and ensure that innovative businesses have the support they need to thrive and grow in the years to come. _Maggie Hassan

We can mitigate all of these problems including the greatest of all these problems which is poverty, we can stabilize the economy, a notable number of us can enjoy good standard of living and beyond if we put a stop to such ignorant acts, “I cannot buy the sugar that has the label of made in Nigeria,” “The local rice is delicious but I cannot buy it because it is from our people in Nigeria.” Lets stop being enemies to our own country, to our own progress. Let’s motivate the companies and industries here to be better, lets support them. Let us be the change we hope to observe in other people.

Nobody is perfect, more so platforms now exist for us to lay our complaints to producers as a way to point out their flaws, which will then lead to their improvement.

Virtually, low patronage that is, lack of (enough) demands which is synonymous to the merchant (or business owner) making less sales is an impetus for their manipulations, like producing inferior goods, just to maximize profits.

Our support which exists in our commitment to purchase from them encourages them to offer better products and services. They will be motivated to be at their best for their loyal customers.

It is not a must to yield to this. But we need to understand that until we invest in our own country before we enjoy the luxury too, before we enjoy growth in our other endeavors too, before we enjoy peaceful and blissful Nigeria. Only a fool will say Nigeria cannot be better. No problem exists without its solution. The Almighty One is so kind to us, He makes all problems co-exist with their solutions. All we need do is discover, realize and act accordingly. What we give, we take. Life operates on cause and effect principle. Nigeria is no exception, therefore we must refine our attitudes towards the products/services made/rendered by our own people in Nigeria.

If not, we are not helping the situation, and that gives us very little right (if there is any at all) to nag about the economic and security situation of the country, and as a result we continue to regress.

We really need to be sensitized over this and let us all see our faults, accept them and make sincere efforts to ameliorate the situation.

Entrepreneurs should patronize entrepreneurs within the country, civil servants should patronize stores within the country, politicians should patronize hospitals within the country and so on. We must unite to rise!

Developed countries are ahead of us despite our amazing resources because of this. They use their own products and services, they also compel people from other countries to come for their people’s products and services. We keep sinking because of our selfish and ignorant attitudes.

No one is saying you should get no foreign product, of course you can because we don’t have everything here but learn to buy more from within the country, encourage businesses here too, help them make more sales to rise up to international standard for our own good. The benefits for doing this cannot be numbered. Invest more in Nigeria, your patronage within the country is a great investment.

We fill your minds with great contents. Don’t miss it!
